Motorcycle Awareness Week Canberra Australia Oct 2008
Today I attended the launch of the Motorcycle Awareness (11th to the 17th of October 2008) week in Canberra, the capital of Australia.It’s a week of activities to promote Motorcycle Awareness and Road Safety to the broader community run by the Motorcycle Riders Association of the ACT(Australian Capital Territory).

The week has a number of key events with the big launch today at Civic Square in front of the Canberra Theatre by several local dignitaries.

One of the key activities for the week is a competition to raise awareness of riders.Commencing at the close of the official launch ceremony was the launch of the “Where’s Joe Rider?” competition proudly sponsored by Seears work wear.

The competition is simple, other road users are asked to look out for JOE rider and when they see JOE to either send an SMS Pete on 0419 866 126 or email joerider@internode.on.net identifying themselves with; Name, contact number and where they saw JOE.
How to identify JOE? That’s easy.  JOE will be wearing a bright YELLOW safety vest with JOE in big black bold writing on the back. View Peter Major’s video to get an insight into the competition.

For the final prize, five lucky entrants are drawn out of the barrel at the Bikers Breakfast on the 17th of October and will have the choice of:
1. An hours pillion around the Australian Capital Territory and districts on a choice of motorcycle (cruiser, sports, sidecar) or scooter;
2. Be a pillion in the lead group of the annual Toy run in December; OR
3. A morning with the Dual Sports Motorcycle Riders Association getting down and dirty in the Kowan forest on your own or a loan motorcycle with tuition.
Do you have a local Motorcycle Riders Safety group? Has your local Motorcycle safety group got an awareness campaign going?As more people move towards riding motorcycles and scooters for cheaper and greener transport, the community around them needs to be doubly aware of the importance of the riders around them.

Programs like “Where’s Joe Rider” go a long away to promoting the awareness of Motorcycle and Scooter riders.

If you don’t have any local awareness campaign going in your area, speak to your local municipal council or government to promote motorcycle awareness programs; it could one day save your life or those you ride with!
